In some recipes, the pecans are switched for walnuts and whipped cream or mayonnaise is added as a topping, and sometimes original Coke is used while other times Cherry Coke is recommended. The Coke Salad pictured above was shared by Magnolia Days, and it includes crushed pineapple, cherries, flavored Jell-O, chopped pecans, a whipped cream topping and, of course, Coca-Cola. So, what is Coke salad for those that don't know? There are plenty of recipes out there for it, and each one tends to differ a little.
Our office recently got into a chat about Coke salad, and while some of us said it was a staple found on every holiday dessert table, there were others who had never heard of it. That said, there are some folks who were surprised to hear of its existence, and a few of them even work at It's a Southern Thing. Honestly, given the way Southerners try to work Coca-Cola into basically every meal in some fashion, no one, especially in the South, should be surprised to hear this is a real food people make and have made for decades.on purpose. Whether we were purchasing, perusing or just passing the time, these stores became the backdrop for many of our lifelong memories.
And every year we’d wait for elaborate holiday displays to adorn the huge plate glass windows. Often an emblematic feature would become part of the local lexicon – Meet me under the clock! – and the place where our life stories played out. Many of our old favorites had restaurants or mile-long candy counters that left us drooling. Need an Easter dress, back-to-school clothes or a Mardi Gras gown? Maybe you’re shopping for fancy jewelry or fancy undies? China, curtains, cosmetics? Toys, tools? Pumps? Pots? You can get it all at the department store – a gazillion square feet of possibility, ice-cold air-conditioning and lighting that always flatters.
If you’re not from the South, you might think these statements refer to families who’ve moved away or maybe an old flame, but down here we know that these names all represent department stores – regional, iconic meccas for all things chic and fashionable. Do you remember the Davison’s? I sure do miss the Kessler’s.
